What is bacteriostatic water?
Bacteriostatic water is sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol, supplied in a 10mL vial for laboratory research. It is used as a diluent to reconstitute lyophilized peptides and reference materials into solution before analysis or handling.
BAC water composition
Each vial contains sterile water with 0.9% (9mg/mL) benzyl alcohol. The benzyl alcohol acts as a bacteriostatic preservative, inhibiting bacterial growth when a vial is accessed more than once. It does not sterilize contents and does not replace aseptic technique.
Use in the laboratory
Bacteriostatic water is the standard diluent for reconstituting lyophilized peptides where a solution will be drawn from more than once. Benzyl alcohol is not compatible with every material, so check the handling notes for the material being reconstituted before use.
Related material in the catalogue
Lyophilized materials suitable for reconstitution are listed under short chain peptides, mid chain peptides, long chain peptides and peptide blends.
